Among the ten nominees are three hotels from Germany, two each from Italy and Austria and one each from France, Iceland and Switzerland. Four hotels are new developments, three hotels have been created from the conversion of buildings formerly used for other purposes, and three nominees are revitalizations and repositionings or completely new buildings of former hotel properties.

Andreas Martin, chairman of the jury: "While in the entire field of 36 hotels new buildings are slightly in the majority, we see this year among the nominated hotels more repurposing and revitalization (6) than complete new buildings (4). Whether it's a bank building, a factory site, a prison, a warehouse, a palace building or even former hotels, the repurposing and revitalization of existing buildings is likely to continue to gain in importance for the development of striking hotel properties in the future."

The jury of experts, consisting of 18 members in total, is made up of representatives from the fields of architecture, operations, development, financing, technical building equipment and design of hotel real estate, as well as representatives from the media and academia. According to 196+ hotelforum, the decisive factor in selecting the nominees is the interplay of the following criteria

  • Architecture and design (innovation)
  • Integration into the project environment (destination)
  • Sustainability and technical innovation (future)
  • Originality of the concept (creativity)
  • Economic efficiency (investment)

Voices of jury members on the ten nominees:

Kerstin Lüdemann, Managing Director MPP Meding Plan + Projekt:

"The top 10 hotels in the competition reflect very well the range of current developments. A large number have been created from conversions and excellent renovation of existing properties and thus serve the destination category in a special way. In addition, some have outstanding interior concepts that make the properties worthy of an award."

Stefan Hoske, Senior Consultant Architecure & Design at AXOR:

"The selection of the top 10 shows that the characteristics of hotel experience, attention to detail, comfort and storytelling are extremely important. Elaborate renovations and restorations or repurposing of old buildings reflect a trend among the nominees. New buildings cleverly integrate into their surroundings and enhance them, or deliberately showcase their architecture to stand out from the neighborhood."
